Animated 3D map

Production notes

An animated 3D map to tell the story of a route. The terrain, the route, in a few seconds.

In a race, travel or adventure video, viewers want to know where they are. An animated 3D map shows them in a few seconds: the terrain, the distance, the elevation, the ground covered and what is left. In December 2025, I animated the map of the Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc for Clemquicourt’s YouTube film: four shots, from the full loop to the ridges at night.

In short: an animated 3D map is a 3D view of a territory, with its relief, on which a route draws itself while the camera moves. It places a race, a trip or a journey in a YouTube video, a documentary or a brand film. For the UTMB, four 16:9 shots, up to 4K, showed the race’s 170 km and three countries. 3D motion design starts at €900 excl. VAT; the price depends on the number of shots and their length.

What I offer: animated 3D maps for content creators, race and sports event films, outdoor brands and documentaries. The terrain relief, your route lighting up, by day or by night, in the formats of your videos.

What a 3D map brings to a video

A flat map says where you are going. An animated 3D map also says what it takes: the climb, the descent, the pass, the valley. For a trail race, a cycling stage or a crossing on foot, the terrain is part of the story.

In a long film, the map comes back as a landmark: at the start to set out the route, between chapters to show where the runner is, at the end to measure the distance covered. A route that lights up shot after shot does this without a word.

The UTMB example for Clemquicourt

Clément Deffrenne, the creator of the Clemquicourt YouTube channel, told the story of his Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc in a 55-minute film. The UTMB goes around the Mont Blanc massif: 170 kilometers, 10,000 meters of elevation gain and three countries, France, Italy and Switzerland.

I animated the 3D map in December 2025: the snow-covered massif in relief, and the race route in magenta, drawing itself around the peaks. Direction and editing are by Léo Euphrasie.

The magenta route moves across the relief, between forests and glaciers, seen from above.

By day and by night

An ultra-trail is also run at night. Two of the four shots show the same terrain under blue light, where the magenta route stands out like a headlamp: it follows a ridge, crosses a summit, then drops toward the valley.

The last shot returns to daylight, in a flyover at the foot of the glaciers. Changing the light on the same map is enough to convey time passing, with no text on screen.

At night, the glowing UTMB route follows the ridge of a snowy peak, under a blue sky.

What I need to start

The route, if you have it: a GPX or KML file, a Strava link, or an annotated map. The points to highlight: start, finish, aid stations, passes, towns or borders.

Then the video’s frame: the number of shots, their length, the format (16:9 for YouTube, 9:16 for social media), the channel’s or brand’s colors, and the edit’s delivery date.

Daytime flyover: the UTMB route runs along the foot of the Mont Blanc massif’s glaciers.

What I offer

I make animated 3D maps for YouTube creators, race and sports event organizers, outdoor brands, tourism boards and documentaries: trail running, ultras, cycling, hiking, sailing, travel or expeditions.

Each shot is delivered as a video, ready for the edit, in 16:9 or 9:16, up to 4K. 3D motion design starts at €900 excl. VAT; the quote depends on the number of shots, their length and the level of terrain detail.
